With the latest Android PIE update, you may have trouble to find how to split screen, see below a short guide on how to split screen on your Android phone easily, simply follow these steps.

1 Open an application in full screen

Start by opening the first app that you want to use in the Android split screen, and have it run in full screen.

2 Open application selection

Then, while the first application to use in split screen is opened, tap on the application selection button, usually a square icon, the last of the three Android button icons on the right side.

3 Select first application for split screen

Now, make sure that the first application to use in split screen mode is selected, which should be the case by default. In case you want to start with another app to be on the upper half or left side of the split screen, have it highlighted here.

4 Display hidden split screen option

Then, long press on the application’s icon, on top of the application thumbnail. This will show a new hidden menu, including the Android PIE split screen option, and the application information button.

In case the split screen option is not available, it means that the application does not support the Android PIE split screen option, and it will not be possible to use it for split screen.

5 Select the second application for split screen

Now, the first application chosen for split screen will be moved to a small part of the upper screen, while the application selection will remain open, to let you select the second application to use in split screen mode, which will appear either on the bottom of the screen, or on the right side of the screen, depending how your phone is currently being held.

Once you have found the second application to use for split screen, simply tap on its miniature to have it displayed in split screen.

6 Two applications running on vertical split screen

That’s it, the second application is now opened below the first one!

In case you were for example playing a video on the first application used in the split screen, that application might have been paused, therefore simply tap on the play button to resume video playing or other activity with that application.

7 Rotate phone to change split screen orientation

In case it is better for what you are doing with the applications, do not hesitate to rotate your phone in order to have the interface being displayed accordingly.

The upper application from vertical multi window view will be displayed on the left side of the horizontal split screen display, and the right application of the horizontal two apps display will be shown on the lower part of the screen in vertical multi window mode.

8 Expand window to come back to single window mode

To stop the split screen, and come back to only one application being shown in full screen, simply tap and press on the middle screen separator, and drag and drop it to the end of the screen.

Depending on the way you move it, it will close the split screen of the app being hidden by the app that you are currently expanding.

9 Change running application in multi window mode

To change one of the applications being used in multi window mode on Android, first tap on the app that you want to change, to make sure is active.

Then, open the application window selector by tapping the Android square button, the last button on the right side of the Android action buttons.

This will replace the current active application by the standard application selector. Simply tap on the app that you want to use in order to change the current application active in that window.

10 Display desktop in multi window mode

It is also possible to display the Android phone’s desktop, by using the round button of the Android action button.

This will replace the current application running in foreground by the desktop display, in which you can select any other application to run.

To be sure that the right application is being replaced by the desktop, first tap on the one of the two apps running in Android split screen to have it active in foreground, and replace it by the desktop when tapping on the Android desktop action button.

Lost interface after update to Android PIE 2019

If you have lost your interface after Android update to PIE version, and cannot find the Android PIE split screen option anymore, it is simply because it has changed location.

The interface simply is different, but functionalities such as split screen are not lost.

In order to find it back, open the application selector, then long tap on the application’s icon.

This will open a hidden menu, on which the split screen option will be available, simply tap on it to have the split screen back on your Android phone after the PIE update.
