The 7 best mobile app for children - teach and entertain them at home

What are the best mobile apps for children?

Nowadays, mobile phones and tablets are not only a way to communicate, work, and pass time, but they can also be a tool to teach and entertain our children.

Especially while staying at home with kids, it can sometimes be very useful to find the right applications that will help them learn new skills, or practice what they already know.

We asked the community what are their favorite mobile app for children, and here are their answers.

Are you using a specific app to entertain or educate your kids? Why would you recommend it, did it bring good results?

Sara Marcum: Kids Learning Box: Preschool for letter and number recognition

Most people praise applications like ABC Mouse and Noggin. In fact, those are the first ones that pop up when you are trying to find a good educational application for children.

I have a preschooler who will be in kindergarten next school year. There are things that he has to master before and during his kindergarten year, these are what we are focusing on. He struggles with his numbers and letters.

He knows them, as memorized, but not by visualization. KidsAppBox has a great app called Kids Learning Box: Preschool. It works on letter and number recognition and has a coloring book type feature.

PSA: My preschooler loves it. He asks to play it. Which is a nice change from Tag with Ryan! The app is helping him with recognizing what the letters look like and we are beginning to use it to help with letter sounds too.

Oksana Chyketa: Dave and Ava comes with tons of educational games

Dave and Ava is probably one of the most powerful interactive apps I’ve ever seen. It comes with tons of educational games along with kids songs which I believe is an excellent solution to learn ABC’s, numbers, colors, counting, spelling, and more.

What I like the most about this app is its collection of early learning content and unique bright and dynamic graphics.

My daughter loves this app; it's really helped her improve her understanding of the alphabet and counting. She also enjoys playing games and singing along.

Melanie Musson: Splash Math is an excellent education app for children

It teaches concept-based math. In that approach, the goal is for children to understand what they need to do in math and why they need to do it instead of memorizing formulas and hoping they choose the right formula for the problem.

The app is set up to be played in a game style, so children don’t feel like they’re learning a boring lesson, but rather they’re having fun playing and they’re learning without realizing it. There are games that reinforce adding money with different coins and bills. There are also several activities that focus on place value, which is important for kids to really understand.

My children have been playing Splash Math for about a few months and the concepts they practice in the app coordinate perfectly with what they’re learning in their schoolwork. I set up their level and the specific concepts they need to work on. I get a report weekly on how much time they spend on the app and how they’re doing. They’ve gotten much quicker at finishing their daily homework because their working knowledge of the concepts has improved greatly.

Christian Antonoff: Endless Alphabet helped teach my daughter the alphabet

Endless Alphabet is a cute, interactive, and educational app that helped teach my daughter the alphabet. The app is super fun and adorable, full colorful monsters teaching her their ABCs and showing her different words with each of the letters. With more than 50 words to explore and learn, my daughter had plenty to play with. I forgot to mention that each letter is accompanied by an interactive puzzle with talking letters and lovely short animations designed to show the meaning of each word. My kid learned many new words in a fun and engaging way, without any pressure.

Mary Koczan: PBS games app keeps my 2.5 y.o. entertained and educated

My 2 ½-year-old can work my smartphone better than I can. I’ve found that the PBS games app is a great way to keep her entertained and educated while I'm working from home.

She chooses the characters she knows and loves from her favorite PBS shows and interacts with them in a new way. Instead of watching them on the t.v., she draws shapes with the little boy and girl in the Dr. Seuss Sketch-a-Mite game. Then, she helps Cookie Monster and Gonger gather ingredients and make snacks in Cookie Monster’s Food Truck game. Lastly, she and Daniel Tiger deal with feelings and situations through song in Daniel Tiger’s Spin and Sing game.

Sean Herman: Kinzoo turns screen time into family time

Kinzoo is a private messaging app that turns screen time into family time. It’s a space where young users learn about technology and grow into responsible digital citizens—surrounded by those who matter most. Kinzoo is innovative because it’s the first app of its kind that brings children and parents together in one private, kid-safe space.

The internet and existing platforms were not designed with kids in mind. Despite this fact, children under 13 made up more than 40% of all new internet users in 2018 and one-third of internet users globally (PWC Kids Digital Media Report 2019, May 2019). To date, investment in this underserved segment has been extremely limited and is being led by big tech. Their business models often rely on data capture and advertising—both of which are ill-suited for younger users for various ethical and legal reasons. Rather than retrofitting an existing adult model, Kinzoo is a greenfield product that’s been purpose-built to meet the needs of modern families. We anticipate a large proportion of children users in the eight- to twelve-year-old age range, and their immediate and extended families.
