But is Claro mobile one of the best portable wireless internet providers in South America? I asked experience from other travelers, and it looks like they have the same idea as me – it is one of the best choice to keep connected while traveling there!

Are you / have you ever been using CLARO mobile operator? In which country / state and for which reasons? What was your experience, was the mobile data connection working fine, was it worth the price, would you recommend it to a traveler to that country or to a resident as a daily usage SIM card?

Tom Blake, This Online World: I used a CLARO SIM card during a 3 month stint in Medellin, Colombia

I used a CLARO SIM card during a 3 month stint in Medellin, Colombia. I was living as a digital nomad on a budget at the time, so price and performance were of the utmost importance.

Every travel guide recommended to use CLARO in Colombia, and I have to say, the performance and coverage in the city was solid. Furthermore, in more remote regions of the country, like the mountainous village of Jardin, I still had decent speed. Data was relatively cheap as well, and there's an abundance of CLARO dealers in Medellin and most major cities from my understanding.

My only caution is to shop from a certified CLARO dealer. My first SIM card purchase was from a mobile phone kiosk, and it turned out to be a fake card. $20 and a few hours of frustration later, I realized I had been dupped and went to a licensed dealer. Stick to these dealers and you won' have problems with cost or performance!

Caio Bersot, communications manager with Rank-it.ca: I travelled to Brazil in February, I could find their products anywhere

I've used the CLARO network and SIM card when I travelled to Brazil in February this year. I spent most of my time in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and some friends suggested this would be the most hassle-free mobile operator sign up process. My experience was really positive overall. I especially liked how practical it was to start using my phone line after I bought a SIM card. When you're travelling abroad, each hour counts, and you don't want to spend an entire morning inside a hotel room figuring out how to set up your account properly.

Another thing I liked about Claro is that I could find their products (SIM cards, prepaid phone credits, etc.) anywhere, from newsstands to bakeries.

I bought one of those prepaid cards with phone credits and it was more than enough for my entire trip. I don't remember making phone calls, but the network coverage was pretty decent. I did run out of network signal in some rural locations, but I guess that's what happens to mobile operators in remote areas anywhere in the world.

I used a Claro mobile SIM card last year on a trip to South America. Other than a few more remote areas, the  mobile data   worked fine and it was worth it to be able to stay in contact with colleagues and loved ones.
